Quad Rover
03/12/08 at 7:34pm

I've just completed rev1 of my new Rover.  I'd been thinking about this for some time and now with the software upgrades I was able to get everything working.  Of course, the hardware is the easy part for me!

I posted a few shots of the rover here:  http://waynesgizmos.blogspot.com/

This is a 2:44 minute video of my rover going through it's basic moves.  I'm using the java console and it's still a bit rough.  A joystick sure would be nice!

This is a :28 minute closeup video of the pan & tilt in operation.

Wayne - hope you don't mind that I split this off into its own thread.

The rover looks great !  I know that you are using the additional SRV-1 Blackfin camera board with the camera mounted parallel to the processor, but did you build your own radio board ?  Also, is that a 4WD base ?

When you have a chance, try to record some video from the rover.  You can go to http://localhost:8888/admin  (user:  webcamsat, pw:  admin) and hit the button to schedule an archive.  It will store the captured video in the archives subdirectory of SRV1Console.  You can directly post the AVI file to YouTube.  Something I'd like to figure out is how to do a picture-in-picture effect that has an external video feed with the captured video in a window.

It's a Lynxmotion A4WD1 chassis using four 12v motors with a sabertooth 2x10 motor controller.  I like this one better than the tri-track as the frame is aluminum vs lexan, plus it has better ground clearance.

I have a modified CAM2+ turret mounted on a base rotate kit.  I used this turret not only because it looks nice, but it's already setup for sensors.  I've three EZ1 ultrasonic transducers installed and still room for an infrared sensor or two.  They work good though they're not always consistent and I'm looking into that.  I could probably mount the lasers there too.

There are four 6v 2800ma batteries running the rover.  The drive motors are using two batteries in series with the Blackfin & Servo's running off one each.

I bought a Blackfin board with a straight connector for the camera as it wouldn't fit in the turret otherwise.  I also purchased a separate  Matchport from Lantronix for R&D and made two crude circuit boards to interface everything.

I'm using the 3.6mm lens on the Rover right now thought the 2.2mm fisheye is pretty nice too.  Unfortunately in my current design it would be a real pain to change the lens.

I like the idea of a picture-in-picture effect.  That would be great!

I'll get some video recorded this weekend and post it.  I've been wanting to take the Rover to the beach to see what sort of range I can get from it!

What type motors are you using? Does it come with the gearhead ones like the tri-track kit? Looks very cool.. I need to finish up some new stuff for mine and get the new firmware loaded..

It has four 12v 30:1 200rpm spur gearhead motors.  They run nice though my low end speed control isn't what I'd like it to be.

I took it out to the beach last week to take an onboard video but had control problems that I just fixed, so maybe I'll try again tomorrow.
It climbed around the dunes good except it would often spin in the sand due to it's light weight.  It can move rather fast with those four motors too!

I just finished a new paint-job with that I'll post photos of in the new future.

I've also been taking advantage of the ultrasonic ranging-data on the overlay that was added recently.  It makes it much easier to move around manually and tell how far objects are away from the rover.  Overall, the EZ1 sensors seem to work well.

That's a good question.  Probably around $700-800 if you add everything up.  I bought parts from four or five different places over several months and never kept a running tally.

Thanks.  I've painted it red & blue since I posted the first pics and it looks great.  I'll try to update the photos first chance I get.
