running dog ashborn parlor guitar

this is a very nice little guitar built by rick davis of running dog guitars in richmond, vermont, based on a "style 2" design by james ashborn, who was building 50 guitars per month in his connecticut factory before the civil war. the running dog ashborn looks like the original, though the purflings and rosette are more subtle. it measures only 11-1/2" wide and 3-1/2" deep, with a 24-1/8" scale, 1-7/8" nut and 2-5/16" string spacing at the saddle. you can see how it compares in size to my keller 00, which is 14-5/8" wide with a 24-7/8" scale.

the guitar has brazilian rosewood back and sides, redwood for the top (from the craig carter "ls" stash), brazilian fretboard, headstock overlay, bridge and rosette, macassar bindings, maple purflings, laminated mahogany neck, maple/ebony fretboard side markers, pyramid bridge, gold waverly tuners with snakewood buttons, and lots of other wonderful details. the fretboard is quite thick and the bridge is fairly tall, so there is a lot of clearance between the strings and the top, while the action is kept low. the guitar delivers a very rich, resonant sound that is much larger than its size. Here are a couple of sound samples -

the guitar came with a very nice ameritage case, but for travel, i ordered a custom blue heron soft case, shown here:
