Web-based administration of ISpy WebCam

Introduction

If your ISpy WebCam software is running under Windows 95 and is connected to the internet, to your provider, or to your LAN at all times, (or has a dial-in server enabled for direct connections) you can install Web-based administration of ISpy WebCam on the machine. It offers all the features in the same layout as the regular ISpy Settings windows. It will allow you to control uploads at remote sites without actually going there!

Requirements

Requirements:

  • The machine running ISpy WebCam is running Windows 95 (Windows 98 and Windows NT not currently supported for this feature)
  • Some way of connecting remotely to your machine:
    • Your machine is permanently connected to the internet
    • Your machine is permanently connected to your LAN
    • Your machine has a dial-up server enabled so you can dial in to it directly
  • MS Personal Web Server with Active Server Pages and Scripting Engine 3.1

Installation

Warning: the following installation procedure for web-based administration of ISpy WebCam is fairly complicated. Make sure you have the proper technical skills to perform the following actions, and please be sure to follow all instructions exactly. If you skip any of the installation instructions below, or choose slightly different options then mentioned below, the installation will not succeed.

MS Personal Web Server

Please check which version of Windows 95 you are running. Go to Control Panel - System, and check the version number you see there. If you see 4.000.950 or 4.000.950 A then go to section 'On standard Windows 95' below. If you see 4.000.950 B then go to section 'On Windows 95 OSR2' below.

On standard Windows 95
Download MS Personal Web Server 1.0a from Microsoft's website. If you have chosen this option during installation of ISpy WebCam, the file will already be located on your local disk as C:\Program Files\ISpy\pws10a.exe. Run the program. You will need to restart your computer afterwards.

On Windows 95 OSR2
Go to Control, Network, Configuration tab, press the Add button, select Service, press the Add button, choose Manufacturer Microsoft, then choose Services Personal Web Server, then press the OK button. You will need your original Windows 95 installation disks. You will need to restart your computer afterwards. If the service is not listed as a service to add, you can follow instructions above under 'On standard Windows 95'.

Active Server Pages

Download Active Server Pages from Microsoft's website. If you have chosen this option during installation of ISpy WebCam, the file will already be located on your local disk as C:\Program Files\ISpy\asp.exe. Run the program. Don't select to install the samples or ADO/ODBC support; that will only fill your hard drive but won't be used by ISpy. You may see an occasional error message about long environment strings etc; just ignore them (or ask Bill what they mean...). You will need to restart your computer afterwards.

Now double-click the Personal Web Server icon which you should see as tray icon in the task bar. If you don't see the icon, go to Control Panel, and double-click the Personal Web Server icon. Now select the Administration tab, and press the Administration button. This should launch a web browser with the administration pages for MS Personal Web Server. If you receive an error message about 'host not found', copy and paste the URL http://localhost/htmla/htmla.htm for the same administration pages. Click on the 'WWW Administration' link, then click on the 'Directories' button, and click the 'Edit...' link next to the 'C:\WebShare\wwwroot' directory (which should be the first directory listed, and have the text 'Home' next to it.) Enable the 'Execute' check box in the 'Access' section, then press the 'OK' button. Now you may close the web browser.

Now, press the Windows 95 Start button, and choose the 'Run...' option from the menu. Type 'regedit.exe' and press Enter. Go to Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Svc\Asp\Parameters and change the value for AllowOutOfProcCmpnts from 0 to 1. Now close the Registry Editor.. If asked if you want to run it or open from current location, select 'yes' and the registry will have been updated. If your web browser insists on saving the file, save it in a temporary location, then launch Windows Explorer, go to that directory, and double-click the file you just downloaded. This should also update the registry.

Scripting Engine 3.1

Download Scripting Engine 3.1 from Microsoft's website. If you have chosen this option during installation of ISpy WebCam, the file will already be located on your local disk as C:\Program Files\ISpy\src31en.exe. Run the program. You may see an occasional error message about failed registration; just ignore them (or ask Bill what they mean...). You will need to restart your computer afterwards.

Dial-up server

If you want to install a Dial-up server on your machine running ISpy WebCam so you can directly dial in to it for remote administration, perform the following steps. Double-click the 'My Computer' on your desktop, then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon you see. On the window that pops up, choose menu option Connections - Dial-Up Server. Select 'Allow Caller Access', add any appropriate users that should have dial-up access, and press OK. You can now dial into your machine using standard Windows 95 dial-up networking.

ISpy Web Administration

Launch ISpy. Copy and paste this URL http://localhost/ISpyAdmin/ into your browser. You should see the admin interface, or an error message explaining what to do. If you see very unclear error messages please contact ISpy Support and send them the full text of the error messages.
